I had not met Paul McCuish officially until recently, but I had seen some of his cabinets at an Art Exhibit he had participated in and I was very impressed with the quality of his work, so much so that I finally got around to calling him to see if we could get together for a bit of a tour of his work and his workshop.
He asked me a few questions, then we set a time to get together and the video and pictures will pretty much tell the whole story ...
Some of the earlier work that Paul did, was to make the wooden Kayak and Row Boat, and to see them in person is evidence of the quality of work he does. I have long said that anyone who gets an opportunity to build a wooden boat will get a whole new insight into woodworking. Boat building requires both precision and patience because although all boats "look" perfect when they are built, the truth is that the left (port) side of the boat is custom made from the right (starboard) side of the boat. This means that all the pieces often need to be hand crafted or at least slightly modified to fit the way they need.
As someone who has participated in boat building, I have nothing but respect for other boat boat builders.
Let me start off with some of the pictures from the Art Exhibit I attended with Paul work being displayed ...
Walnut Desk with custom Drawer Pulls
Maple Wall Cabinet with Book-Matched Spalted Door Panels
Floor Standing Cabinet with Book-Matched Spalted Door Panels
Floor Standing Walnut Cabinet with Figured Maple Book-Matched Panels
The following pictures are just some of the detail from woodworking projects at Pauls home location
Details of Wood Inlay on Figured Maple Box
Floor Standing Cabinet (notice the top with up-sweeping sides and variance of wood thickness)
This is the side of the floot standing cabinet, notice how the legs are integrated into the side of the cabinet, also see the Knive Hinges Paul often uses in his cabinetry
Greene and Greene inspired End Table with Walnut Highlights (also note the custome Drawer Pull)
And that is just a sample of the kind of work that Paul does, elegant and functional and above all, beautiful to look at.
Thanks again Paul for the tour that I can now share with others ...
