Table Saw Bowl Jig

The half round dish is one of those projects that can stymie some woodworkers. Most think it is made on a lathe ... and it could be, but for those who don't have lathes, this handy little dish can actually be made on the table saw with a jig designed to create it, and it's not complicated and once you have made one, you will want to make more because these little items are quite popular because they look great, sit flat on most surfaces and perfect little serving dishes, or they can be used as a catch-all on your entryway table ...

The jig won't take you that long to make, so if you want a decorative wood to use, even for your first attempt, now would be a great time to cut and glue something up because by time the glue is dry and hard enough to use, you will likely have your jig made and be anxious to use it .

How to Finish Wood w/ Owatrol Products - Wood Finishing a Live Edge Table Top

I always love trying new products because you never know until you at least try something, just how go it will be and where it is best to use it. I recently had the opportunity to try out some of the Owatrol Coatings products and they easily lived up to what I expected. The products I used were oil products, some even had some light coloring in them and I had some choices of both indoor and outdoor products. The Owatrol Company is based in France and has been in business for many years and during that time have developed a very impressive line up of products, and broadened their distribution to most of Europe, the United Kingdom, into the Scandinavian Countries etc, and are now bringing their products to North America.

The first product I tried was something called Teak Olje (pronounced Teak Olyeah) which is an indoor product, primarily at Teak Oil with some special additives to allow the oil to soak into the wood better. Teak can be used on any wood, it doesn't have to be Teak Wood, and it will still provide a rich look and a long-lasting finish and is well suited for indoor furniture. I love it when you can get even more usage from a tool with some slight modifications ... in fact, this tool mod gave me TONS more use from my hand held belt sander that I would have ever got from it as a hand-held unit. This little conversion is known and it's a great way of getting so much more from a belt sander.

To start off with, you will need a hand held belt sander with accessory bolt holes in the top. Not all belt sanders have these, in fact, most of the new sander does not have these accessory holes, but check because they may have some other options that would do the same job, or could attach them with a different system that might not be as easy, but equally effective in the end. Others may have some other form of attachment but the bolt attachment works well and is easy to work with.

I don't know what I would do without magnets .. they have got to be one of the handiest things in the workshop and with the new Earth Magnets, they are super strong and so small you can use them in many many places that I would never have thought of years ago, but now, they come in so many shapes, sizes, and strengths you can find many applications for them.

Working with Live Edge Wood / Live Edge Slabs: Money Saving Hacks for Woodworking Part 6

Natural edge or live edge lumber has become a quite a trend in the past few years and many lumber stores are now offering a variety of species that are either single or double sided live edge. Unlike purchasing ordinary lumber, and selecting it for grain, color, and type of cut, natural edge lumber is unique because every board is different.

Often the cost of this natural edge lumber is premium priced, and of course, there are all sorts of different choices in how the edges look so, first of all, finding a piece you like at any one of the lumber stores who offer it, then getting the optimum usage from that natural edge plank is imperative.

Probably more than any other kind of lumber, you really need to have a good idea what you are going to make and the dimensions of it before you even start looking for natural edge lumber ... unless of course, you are just buying lumber on "spec" which I do from time to time, then hope it will fit what I want to do with it when the time comes ... I still have some pieces that haven't found a use yet ... but one day .... one day ....

5 Quick Measuring Hacks Part 2 - Woodworking Tips and Tricks

Measuring and Marking are a big part of woodworking and anything we can do to make it easier and more accurate will only make the work more pleasurable. There is nothing worse than working on a project right up until assembly then finding that one or more of the pieces don't fit and the part or parts need to be re-made. Making thing right the first time is just so much easier. I find it's better to take my time to the build rather than trying to rush and make mistakes because often the mistakes are fundamental measuring errors that lead to parts problems later on.

One of the tricks I learned recently was how to make a circle using a square, a pencil, and 2 nails. At first, I couldn't see how it could even work. Something about it didn't seem right and I wasn't able to visualize it in my mind, I had to actually try it out, and wouldn't you know ... it works ...
