Trim Router / Palm Router Design Base Jig

Thanks to one of my subscribers Fred, who sent me a picture of what this jig looks like, I thought it was a neat idea so decided to make one for myself. Like many things in woodworking there are often many ways to accomplish the same thing and I have made designs in doors like this in the past and there are pros and cons to each method but this looked like a fun little project ... so here goes ...

The first thing I decided to do was to make it out of clear plastic. This base needs to be very accurate in order to go around the whole inside of the frame and still end up in the same place for the cuts and that is another reason I preferred plastic. Hardboard would work fine and be easier to work with but plastic is a bit sturdier for a job like this ...

The version I made is from pine, and although pine is a soft wood to work with, the fact that it is glued in many places means it will last for generations without losing it rigidity that you would get with nails of screws. The nice thing with pine is that it's a beautiful wood to look at, to work with and can be finished in many different ways for clear coats to paint ...

Testing Wood Glues - Titebond Vs. Bondrite Adhesives

There are new products coming on the market at a rapid pace and trying to keep up with them can be a chore. Recently I found a new kind of glue that one of my suppliers spoke quite highly of. I haven't tried any new glues for a long time so I decided this might be a good idea to see if maybe it's time for me to switch glues. I thought the best way of seeing if the glue lived up to the recommendation or not would be to compare it with what I am using now, What really caught my attention was the label on the bottle that said "Accepts Stain" and "Fast Setting".

I wasn't looking to see which glue was better than the other, but more than I already have been using Titebond Original glue for many, many years so I know what it does and it would be a good glue to use as a comparison to this new glue. I found pricing to be very similar so that was a good start ...

Save Money with DIY Wood Dye / Dyeing Wood Technique

There are many different ways to change the color of wood and the most common is by coating the wood with some sort of a color stain or even a color dye but you can also change the color of wood by using simple household products that change the color of wood by reacting to the tannin in the wood.
Anyone who has ever made wine, especially from scratch, will have heard of tannin, which is just a mild acid that is contained in many wood species of plant, including grapes and vines. In winemaking the tannin is added as a power to enhance the taste of the wine.

In woodworking, we can use that same tannin in wood to change the color of the wood by altering it chemically and allowing the tannin to change color during the process.

Table Saw Riving Knife / Splitter Set-up and Alignment. Prevent Table Saw Kickback.

From time to time, I like to stop all jobs in the workshop to fine tune. This could mean sharpening tools or it could be repair or re-adjusting things to make them work better. Recently I had a good look at the where the Riving Knife and the Splitter are attached to my table saw. What I noticed is that in the lower part of the attachment block there appeared to be some bolts that looked like, if they were taken off, I might be able to fix the positioning and alignment of my riving knife and splitter.

I don't use my Riving Knife very often but I DO use my splitter a lot because it helps with the dust extraction and keeps the shop cleaner and more dust free. Every time I have to take the splitter off, it annoys me that the block it sits in is out of alignment and I have to use shims in order for it to work. I paid a lot for this saw and that one thing should have worked better than it does. I should not have to use shims that fall off into the base of the saw every time I have to take the splitter off to use a table saw jig or cut vertical wood, so it's time to fix this ...
