One of the things I like most about woodworking is being able to experiment and try new things, even if others have done them, I still like to see if I can do them and how they are done. Making balls on a lathe has long been one of those experiments I have wanted to do, so I decided to take some time and experiment with what it takes to do this.

I had an idea in my head as to what I thought this jig would look like, but as I moved along, I could see that my original design, although it would still work, could be made much easier by changing a few things and that's what I did. Instead of making a stand-alone jig, I could see that incorporating it into the bed of the lathe would be much easier and would stronger too.

It's not often that I get a chance to work with some of the more commercial woodworking machinery, but when I do it's a thrill to see what's new, how it works. The advancements and innovations in woodworking have moved ahead immensely in recent years and I love to see how these machines work. I was very excited to be part of the Maksiwa emergence in North America because I felt strongly they had some equipment that would be a big interest to a certain segment of my viewers. The Maksiwa Portable Edge Bander and Edge Trimmer Machines perfect for many woodworking shops for their price/value, their size and portability, and what they can do.

The units arrived in three boxes and except for a few components that need to be removed for shipping, they come substantially ready to go. After unpacking, I think both my machines prepped in an hour, but what can really help this is taking a few minutes to watch the YouTube Videos on setting these up.

The table saw is an amazing tool and with few modifications and accessories it can do so much more than simply ripping wood, which is what it was designed for and still does an awesome job of it, but before all things, the table saw needs to be set-up properly and maintained and when this done, it will continue to give amazing results.

My table saw is often subjected to a wide variety of experiments and adaptions for all sorts of different projects that I get involved with but the one thing I always come back to is both fear and respect for the table saw and making sure I think every cut through before I make it and that way I reduce the risks of any mishaps and just knowing how it operates goes a long way to safety ...

I honestly do not know why it has taken SO LONG for tool manufacturers to come out with cordless sanders. I have been asking for these for years and years, and finally, only in the last several months have they been coming to the market, and to prove I was correct about their popularity, they have been somewhat hard to get hold of, but I finally put in my order and my cordless sander has arrived.

What made my purchase somewhat more urgent recently was that I noticed the pad on my old Bosch sander, which has served me extremely well for 12 or so years, once again needs replacing, so now is a perfect time to upgrade to a new cordless sander ...

Clamping cauls have probably been around as long as woodworking, but they seem to come in and out of favor. New woodworking tools, attachments, jigs, and techniques come along on old ways are often forgotten. But not everyone has the latest tools, jigs, and techniques, in fact many, especially in woodworking, like doing things the traditional way and what could be more traditional than Clamping Cauls ....

At one time, much earlier in my woodworking career, I used nothing but clamping cauls for all sorts of assembly and glue-up jobs. They worked great then and they still work great, I just don't use them much anymore, have fallen to another technique that I like, and that works well for me, the Dowelmax systems ... but that doesn't mean I have abandoned clamping cauls, they are still invaluable for certain jobs ...
