Milling Wood Using a Bandsaw - Logs to Live Edge Lumber

There are few things in woodworking that I enjoy more than milling wood ... every new cut is like opening a Birthday Present because you just never know what is going to be inside. I even remember the first time I was part of our Woodworking Guild - Milling Crew, and what it was like to watch the saw come through the log and slice off a plank, which we then had to take over to the stacking and drying pile, and what a joy it was to turn over that log to see what the grain looked like inside.

For me, this process never gets old, and when I talk to many people who have their own mills, they experience the same thoughts when they are milling wood, especially when they get logs that appear on the outside to be something special ... sometimes they are figured or spalted wood, other times they are just regular, good quality wood.

The internet is full of information on woodworking and not all of it is good information. You really need to look at things to see if they are going to be good, or if they are going to be problematic, or even worse ... dangerous to your well being. What I often see are pictures or descriptions of processes or ideas that are put forward on one website, then replicated on many others, and none of them seem to figure out that what they are replicating is not a very good idea at all.

That's why I like to explain things because that way people who watch my videos get a much better idea how things work and why something might not be such a great idea after all ...

Making boxes and woodworking go hand in hand. I can't imagine how many boxes I have made over the years in every conceivable size and configuration and it's interesting how many different ways there are to make a box that basically has 6 sides. Some are very simple while others are elaborate. I am always fascinated when I visit antique stores and swap meets to see all the different kinds of wooden boxes that show up and look at how they were built ...

I many ways this build is somewhat like those antique boxes I often look at ... nothing fancy, just a storage box that requires a specific size to fit in a specific location and that means a bit of custom woodworking ...
Router Depth Setter: Wood Router Jig for Setting Depth

This is a very quick and easy jig to make and is easy and quick to use. It will work for any router, provided the base can sit within the slots and that the router bit will drop drown on top of the depth gauge wood that you select. This jig will NOT work for router bits that have a bearing, but on some selected bits, it may be possible to drill holes in the depth gauge wood and still use this methodology.

I started off with a known base which for me was someone inch thick MDF material. I measured my router bases and decided that a 10-inch square base would be easy to handle and would work with all three of my routers ...
