| Try square |
The try square checks work more 90 degree angles and for smoothness. It also marks right angle cuts on boards. |
| Universal motor |
Universal motors are typically found on drills, circular saws, pad sanders, belt sanders, jig saws, mitre saws, routers and wet/dry vacs. They have the advantage of being compact while being able to produce high speeds and offer a wide range of speed and power. They are however noisier than induction motors and their life is limited by the quality of their brushes. |
| Varnish |
Transparent liquid that dries on exposure to air to give a decorative and protective and protective coating when applied as a thin film. |
| Wash Coat |
Typically uses as the first coat of a finish. The wash coat is used to change the appearance or porosity of a surface. |
| Withering |
Withering a loss of gloss is sometimes caused by varnishing open-pore woods without filling pores, use of improper undercoating or applying top coat before undercoat has dried. |
| Wood Filler |
There are two kinds of fillers-paste and liquid. Paste fillers are something like a very thick paint and are composed of some solid powdered substance, usually silica or powdered quartz, mixed with linseed oil or varnish thinned with turpentine or benzine. |
| Wood lathe |
A wood lathe rotates the workpiece on a horizontal axis. Wood turning chisels are then applied to the piece to round the stock or to create straight, rounded, squared, and V shaped cuts. |
| Working Life (Pot Life) |
The amount of time after mixing that a glue or paint remains usable. Often used when referring to two-part epoxy and polyester glues. |
| Wrap Around hinge |
A style of hinge where the plates of the hinge are formed around the back edge of the door and/or the face frame. A partial wrap around hinge will wrap around the door and have a plain flat leaf for the cabinet so it can be used on a frameless cabinet. A full back-to-back wrap around hinge with wrap around on both halves of the hinge so it can be used on a face frame cabinet. |
| Zero Clearance hinge |
A hinge that allows unobstructed access for pullout shelves or drawer when a door is open to 90 degrees or more. This means that the door will not protrude into the area of the cabinet opening when open. This is only possible in a full overlay door layout. |
