  • Tree: Maple Burls come from Sugar Maples, which may reach a height of 70 to 120 feet, with a 24 to 36 inch diameter trunk. Burls often form at the base of the tree, but may also form in the branches.
  • Color: Often darker than ordinary Maple, pale reddish brown to creamy beige.
  • Grain: Numerous whorls and swirling patterns with curly grain. Due to the nature of burls, there are often voids from the bark.
  • Texture: Very fine, even and satiny.
  • Working properties: Maple burl is much softer than ordinary Maple and is a pleasure to work with.
  • Strength Properties: Due to the varying grain patterns of Maple burl, it should not be used in any load-bearing applications. Its strength is unpredictable at best.
