  • Native to: Southeast Asia.
  • Average Dried Weight: 42lb/cubic foot.
  • Common Uses: Carving, Inlay, Marquetry, Musical instruments, Piano keys, Turning, Drum sticks, Decorative Woodwork, Violin bows, Xylophones.
  • Sapwood: Varies from whitish yellow to brown or reddish. Clearly demarcated from heartwood.
  • Heartwood: Generally black with light bands, medium brown zones, or with stark contrast between nearly white and black wood. The heartwood may be more brittle than the lighter sapwood.
  • Grain: Generally straight, sometimes irregular.
  • Texture: Fine and even.
  • Allergies: Sawdust may cause respiratory and skin problems in some people.
  • Natural Durability: Heartwood has high natural resistance to decay.
