This book was published to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the North House Folk School in northern Minnesota. When deciding on the theme for the book, the staff members at the school had to look no further than the piles of birch shavings and bark that lay at their feet. Throughout history into today, the birch has served many cultures across the world for useful items, and is widely celebrated in traditions, folklore and myths.
The book comprises four main sections:
- Birch Bark: 12 projects from bark
- Birch Lore and Legends
- Birch Wood: 8 projects from wood
- Birch’s Biology and Ecology: Understanding birch, its uses and its future
