Colin replied to the topic 'Finish for an oak toy box' in the forum.Hey, that looks great and thanks for posting the unfinished, it helps to compare more. Yup, that edge grain soaked up a bit more oil and goes a bit darker and that's what really shows off the box joints ... excellent job Rip!

Colin replied to the topic 'Changing finish on IKEA Hemnes TV Bench' in the forum.Wow !! I think you did a fantastic job. I also love the detail of the drawer pulls, they make all the difference.
I think you have really nailed the antiquing part down, what's chance of getting your to do a bit of a write up about what you started with and what you did to get this look and we will post in under the Finishing section.
I'm sure there are many, many others who would love this look and would like to replicate it.
Once again, great Job ...

Colin replied to the topic 'wood grain' in the forum.Hi BB ... Well, let me see if I can help with this. If you are hand planing, you can plane with or against the grain. Normally against the grain planing is done to reduce the depth of of the board and/or to flatten a the wood. When you plane against the grain, we would normally finish with planing with the grain to remove any gouges. If the board is already flat planing with the grain either by had or machine is most common.
To check the grain, look closely at the all sides. Where you can see the end grain, that is what looks like very tiny holes, that is the end grain so cutting across that would be against the grain cutting perpendicular to the end grain would be cutting or planing with the grain.
I hope I am making sense here for you
