Working With the Dremmel 4000 Print E-mail

Dremel 4000The Dremel 4000 is the most powerful machine in the Dremel family of power tools. With its new design and well-thought features, as well as its extensive list of add-ons, it is definitely a must for any hobbyist. It can allow you to accomplish a wide range of cutting and finishing tasks for projects on a wide variety of materials.

Power and Comfort

The main distinction of the Dremel 4000 from other power tools is its design. It is smaller and lighter than older brands. It can perform well through speeds from 5,000 up to 35,000 RPM without Dremel models, and even existing models of other distracting and straining vibration. The soft grip on the handle, and the conveniently placed power switch, makes using this tool one of the most enjoyable experiences in your garage or workshop.

The Fein Multimaster Multi-purpose Oscillating Tool Print E-mail
Fein MultimasterThis Fein Multimaster tool-kit is one of those tools that is a pricey investment, but is one that will make your job completion easier and faster. In the previous two years, attending woodworking shows, I would always find myself watching the demos on the Fein MultiMaster tool. I was ALWAYS impressed as to what the tool was capable of.  I recently saw the ad for the newest version with the quick blade release and the package supplied attachments.  More importantly, I had also found work that required this sort of tool!

I had to perform a job of installing ornamental returns on an old house with period moldings. The old returns had rotted together with some of the crown rake boards. Making the new returns wasn't an issue; trimming back the 4-inch crown molding was bound to be boring to say the least. I bought the Fein Multimaster tool-kit and felt the discomfort all the way back to the job…crown molding to solid wood. The roof’s 12/12 pitch made it nearly impossible to perform the task at hand with any speed while using steady tools.

Getting the Right CNC Woodworking Machine Print E-mail
CNC Woodworking MachinePurchasing a new CNC machining centre can be an enjoyable offer. With each passing year, the rate and technology advance considerably. In spite of the attractiveness of CNC machines available in sculptured housings and exciting color schemes, the final analysis of a woodworking company may simply be influenced if a careful plan is laid out for achieving the most from the machine.

Deciding the purpose
The first step is to figure out how the new machine will be used. For example, since machining centers can route as well as drill, consider whether you want both. Also, identify if you'll need to drill horizontally for dowels, grooves for backs and routes for shelf standards.

Document the construction techniques that are used and all of the hardware that's needed. Care should be used to make sure that the CNC machine is ready for the job to be executed. There should be satisfactory tool shafts so that different drills may be employed, otherwise, the construction strategy must be modified to scale back the tool diameters.

Also, decide whether the woodworking plan needs entire sheets to be cut on the router, or if cutting is on a saw and the machining is to be done on a router.  For nesting, a special table will be necessary and also a forceful vacuum to hold the parts prepared. Since nesting machines cannot drill horizontally, a stand-alone machine could be needed. It is critical to understand the maximum part size and check out if it will fit on the router bed previously as a large amount of machining centers are engineered to machine a 24" deep gable only.

The Rockwell SoniCrafter Oscillating Tool Print E-mail

sonicrafterI'm not sure that there has a single kind of tool which has been more popular at a particular time, then the oscillating tool is today. The real reason behind this, is the proven fact that the majority of these tools have all come out about the same time. Rockwell , unlike Bosch and Dremel, is comparatively unknown, but has a couple of things that are helping them out. One being the idolization of their JawHorse which I've seen debated in a number of tool related notice boards, another is their infomercials. Which is also the way the Fein MultiMaster was first sold. The Rockwell SoniCrafter is right up there with the dearer Fein MultiMaster re power. The MultiMaster is listed as having 250 watts, and the SoniCrafter is listed as having 2.3 amps. We multiply the amp times the volts to get the watts. 2.3 amps x 120 volts = 276 watts. This is the top output, so I'm going to call them even at 250 watts.

Freud Doweling Tool Review Print E-mail

OK woodworkers, time to sell off your biscuit jointer, this new tool from Freud will make it almost obsolete. What Freud has done is taken the carcass of their biscuit jointer and made it into a dowel cutting tool. The unit that we tested uses two different drill sizes, we elected to use the size that was in the unit on receipt. On first looking at the tool we see that it has all the same tool adjustments and settings of any top quality biscuit jointer so this tool can be used almost anywhere a biscuit can be used. We were very excited to test this tool as we were looking for a tool that could do what a biscuit jointer could do, but with more accuracy and this is the tool that can do it. Basically it works the same as any biscuit jointer except that instead of cutting a semi round slot in your wood this unit drills two exact holes. The problem I have always had with biscuit jointers, or at least the biscuits that are used with them is they are far from precision when compared with dowels.

Biscuit jointers are used primarily in aid of joining boards together. The whole problem of joining boards together is that they are often mis-aligned with one another, then we go and add glue to the edges and hope they will glue together perfectly even so that there is little or no sanding needed and the boards align beautifully. Sadly this never happens, no matter how hard we work at it because between the slots cut by the biscuit jointers and fact that the biscuits themselves fit very loosely into the slots, there is lots of room for movement, and once the boards are clamped together they tend to move even more.

Freud quadra-cut rounding over bits Print E-mail

Any ROUTER with a ROUND OVER BIT is probably one of the most used combinations in woodworking. Virtually every woodworker has at least one router and one of the first and most useful bits they will ever purchase is the round over bit. If you are like me, you problably have a few different sizes of these too.

Round over bits are great ... MOST of the time, but sometimes with the direction the grain runs on some wood that round over bit you love so much will actually tear out or rip the grain of that wood you are trying to round over. Very often the tear-out is hard to see, but run your hand over it and sure enough, it's rough. There is nothing left to do except hopefully sand the rough part down, and hope it doesn't have to be sanded down so far that it starts to become an obvious flaw in the piece.

Does this sound familiar to you ... you bet it does, has happened to all of us. But no worries, Feud to the rescue with their introduction of Quadra Cut bits. The difference with these bits is they now have 4 cutter heads in stead of 2 like most other router bits. So why 4 cutters instead of 2, well the answer is a few reasons.

The Jimmy Jig for for table saws Print E-mail
Seumas McCombie has invented a innovative sliding table top jig for table saws that makes cutting safer and more accurate. By simply clamping this jig to your standard table saw you can make single person cuts to material up to 30 feet long while keeping the material 100% pallerall to the saw blade.

A Revolution in Paint Removal - The Silent Paint Remover Print E-mail

Sometimes I buy tools to do jobs that I hate doing, then I find out that the job wasn't so bad after all when I had the right tool. The feature tool for his issue is something called the "Silent Paint Remover" (SPR). Around our house the paint stripper is my wife, and depending on the project she is working on, she is anything but silent, so this tool intrigued me .... a lot! This tool incorporated a new technology, Infrared, that I wanted to know more about.

Freud RTS5300 Router/Table Combo Package Review Print E-mail
Image WOW ... That is probably the best word I can use to describe the Freud Router Table package, and that word might be an understatement. This package includes the FT3000VCE Router and SH-5 Micro-Adjustable Fence.
Anyone who is serious about using any router knows that over 80% of router projects require the use of a router table. With this in mind, and based on the price of this tool we decided to give this a good run for it’s money. The Freud router table is not like many of the inexpensive tables you can purchase from your local hardware store. This table can easily be considered a main tool to your existing stable of equipment ... click below to see how

Festool TS 75 EQ - TS 55 EQ Plunge Cut Saw Review Print E-mail
If you are under the impression the Festool Circular saws were just another run-of-the-mill circular saw ... Boy! are you wrong. These two circular saws are revolutionary ... Finally someone has made a circular saw for woodworkers, not just for carpenters. These saws will deliver precision cuts, which is what woodworkers are looking for. If you are in construction or building houses, these circular saws will work fine for, as will many others, but if you are a "woodworker" you need to look at these saws ... they may change what you thing about your tool collection - in fact, you may be thinking of selling some tools to acquire one of these little gems ...

Festool Deltex Detail Sander Print E-mail
Yikes ... this detail sander saves a lot of time, not to mention frustration. Sometimes I wonder what I was thinking when I take on projects. Recently I was asked if I could "just sand a chair " that one of the neighbours down the street was re-finishing. I said sure, bring it over. After all how tough could it be to sand an old wooden chair ... or so I thought. Never in my wildest dreams did I envision I would have to be doing a star-performance sanding job on restoring an onld windsor chair that was said to be over 100 years old. This was not going to be a job for the belt sander !!!
